Vaccinating and deworming your dog or cat no longer means taking them out of the house, putting them in a carrier, and waiting in a room full of nervous animals. Why home vaccinations reduce stress
Transportation and the waiting room are two of the most anxiety-inducing experiences for dogs and cats. A stressed animal performs poorly during the examination; it may still receive the same level of immunization, but it suffers more. In cats, stress can mask symptoms or cause behaviors that hinder the examination. Vaccinating at home means the visit takes place in their own territory: a calm sniffing experience, a more reliable examination, and an experience they don't associate with anything unpleasant.
Puppy vaccination schedule
As a general guideline, the usual protocol in Spain is:
- 6-8 weeks: first polyvalent vaccine (distemper, parvovirus, hepatitis…).
- 9-11 weeks: second booster dose.
- 12-16 weeks: third dose and rabies vaccine (mandatory in most territories; in Madrid it is mandatory for dogs).
- Starting from the year: annual reinforcements valued according to lifestyle.
In cats, the usual vaccination schedule combines the trivalent vaccine (panleukopenia, calicivirus, and herpesvirus) around 8 and 12 weeks of age, with rabies vaccination according to regulations and habits (for example, if the cat is going to travel). Each kitten is different: in the home visit I review their history and adjust the schedule to their age, weight, and time of arrival home.
Vaccination in adult dogs and cats
As an adult, your pet will need regular booster shots to maintain its immunity. Not all vaccines are repeated annually with the same frequency: they are determined by age, whether your pet goes outdoors, lives with other animals, or travels. My approach is to vaccinate only what is necessary, without over-vaccinating, and to document this in its vaccination record.
Internal and external parasite control
Deworming has two aspects:
- Internal (intestinal parasites): monthly in puppies up to 6 months and, as an adult, a guideline every 3 months, which I adjust according to their lifestyle.
- External (fleas, ticks, mosquitoes): Monthly protection with the most suitable format for your furry friend (pipette, tablet or collar), especially in spring and summer and if they walk in grassy areas such as the Guadalix area or the Corredor pine forests.
